Wheat: What we’re doing

We are really excited by wheat! At the end of October we managed to plant a ‘field’ of Wildfarmed population wheat at the front of our school. We cleared the space and planted strips of wheat seeds interspersed with our cover crop mix with the hope that this will feed the soil biology, harness nitrogen and keep those weeds in check. So many families and neighbours stopped to find out more and to lend a hand. By doing this we have started the conversation about where flour comes from and about how making changes to the way we grow can have a positive impact on both our health and our planet.

Just before the end of the school year we all ‘combined as harvesters’ to bring in our wheat and once it is milled we be using it in the bakery. As Autumn approaches, we will begin the cycle all over again.
